A Boeing B777-300ER of Turkish Airlines registered TC-JJG, on approach to New York JFK Intl Airport yesterday, suffered heavy turbulences.

Due to the turbulences, 30 people got injured, varying from bruises to cuts. One person suffered a broken leg due to the turbulences. Among the injured there were passengers as well as crew members. Everyone who was injured was taken to a nearby hospital after the B77W landed at 5:35PM ET. (21:35 UTC)

Amir Mehrbakhsh, one of the passengers on board said: ”There was like one or two seconds when it was subtle, but then it really started to pick up. Just because the drop was so sudden, a lot of people got lifted up and hit their head either on the ceiling or on the side of the plane, and so there were a lot of injuries pretty quickly.”

THY1 was over the state of Main, approximately 30 minutes out from landing at JFK while it was hit with severe turbulences. According to the FAA the crew decided do declare an emergency as they didn’t figure out it was turbulence.
